Health Care & Colonoscopies

Today’s New York Times has an excellent piece explaining why health care is so expensive in this country. The author –Elisabeth Rosenthal–cites the costs of colonoscopies as a example par excellence of what’s wrong.

She details the variation in cost around the country and the high cost of the procedure. Colonoscopies have been the “gold standard” for detecting colon cancer. It is also the best therapy–removing polyps–for colon cancer in its early stages. But half of us don’t get a colonoscopy and it is costly. Soon thanks to Exact Science we will have a non-invasive test that detects colon cancer and if someone tests positive they MUST get a colonoscopy to save their life. Early detection is the key!
