Liver Transplantation

Liver Transplantation

We have been working with the transplant surgeons at Indiana University. They and many of their colleagues around the country are concerned about a proposal from UNOS to abolish the local sharing of livers for transplantation . It turns out that there is nearly a 100% difference in the efficiency as measured in donations per eligible deaths. The best in country is Iowa which recovers 82 livers for every 100 eligible deaths. The worst is upstate New York with only recovers 43 livers per 100 eligible deaths. If every OPO would just increase their number of livers by 5 there would be an additional 290 organs instead UNOS wants to abolish all local sharing. It rewards poorly performing parts of the country and punishes the parts of the country that do a good job.
