Investment in Cranberry Industry

We are very happy to report that Congress has appropriated an additional $750,000 annually to invest in “improving cranberry yields, pest management, disease management, and water resource management by developing fields devoted to cranberry research. This research includes collection and storage of samples for analysis in appropriate existing laboratory facilities.” This increase in funding is thanks to the efforts of the Wisconsin Congressional Delegation, and especially to the work of Senator Tammy Baldwin, who was able to include the funding at the meeting of the Senate Appropriations Committee on which she serves.

We hope that this funding can be used to advance the work of cranberry researchers throughout the United States, and further hope that Wisconsin will have the opportunity to become the host of the new fields and collection and storage facilities that Congress envisioned. Wisconsin is the nations top producer of cranberries, with more than 60 percent of national cranberry production coming from Wisconsin growers. Wisconsin growers produce 2 times the number of barrels per acre as the next leading cranberry producing state (Massachusetts). The cranberry growers in Wisconsin are very excited about the opportunity to lead advances in cranberry research.
