Lincoln & Lobbyists

Lincoln & Lobbyists

The Lincoln movie is outstanding. One of the interesting twists is the role of lobbyists in the story. The key drama in the film is whether or not the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery will pass the  House by the required two-thirds vote in January during a lame duck session. Secretary of State Stanton hired “two agents” to offer federal employment to lame duck Democratic Congressman. The vote was won by a one vote margin and the difference were some key lame duck Democratic members that  the lobbyists hired by Stanton  persuaded through various means to support the abolishment of slavery.

Whether people like it or not–lobbyists are key to the process including the abolishment of slavery.
