Child’s lung transplant case reveals flaw in UNOS process

The case of the little 10 year who needs a lung transplant that was prohibit is the latest example of the flaw UNOS process. UNOS is based on a consensus of transplant professional would inevitably protect the weak and marginal programs.

Their real mission should be to maximize the use of a very scarce resources to transplant the maximize number of patients who are successfully transplanted.

UNOS is a  sole source contractor with the Department of Health and Social Services that sadly and desperately needs reform.

This latest episode of coming perilously close to a little girl succumbing because she is 10 instead of 12 (and hence ineligible for an adult lung) is proof positive of how broken the system is. Reform is needed and it is time for Congress to look into the matter. It was only a wise federal judge that prevent tragedy.

Hopefully the doctors in Congress will step up and do something.
