Liver Battle Pits Midwest, South Against California, New York

Liver Battle Pits Midwest, South Against California, New York

On September 16 UNOS convene a national dialogue on liver allocation.

Previously UNOS was planning to redistrict the country in a way that would do great harm to the Midwest and South.

On behalf of our client —the Transplant surgeons at Indiana—we worked for many months with little help or support but didn’t give up. Slowly the momentum picked up and recently a number of members of Congress have expressed serious concern. Also and more importantly surgeons got concerned. As a result it now appears that there will be an effort to develop a consensus on liver allocation. The fundamental problem is that there much more demand than supply. Part of the solution must be increase donations. While the Midwest especially has been ahead of the curve on donation, the coasts have lagged behind.

It was for a long time a discouraging and lonely fight. Frankly, last week was an unqualified success.
